(NEW YORK) -- The New York Rangers came from behind to defeat the Washington Capitals, 2-1 on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers (8-5-1, 17pts) were not sure Rick Nash was going to play for them against Washington, but he suited up after going through warmups without injury.

Nash then proceeded to log an assist on Carl Hagelin's game-tying goal in the second period. "They're not going in, but I'm getting the chances," Nash said. "A couple of posts and point-blanks. I thought they were going in for sure. The exciting thing is Carl is putting them in."

The winning goal came from Derek Stepan in the third period on a power play for New York.

Washington (5-9-1, 11pts) allowed 40 shots on goal in the loss. "We could have played better," Capitals coach Adam Oates said. "We took too many penalties. We spent so much energy killing penalties. It took away from the rest of our game."
